No Looking Back Now!

It's been awhile!  I've been really busy with work and haven't had the time to capture what has happened at the house.  Here's an update on the status...

The deck and mini deck are pretty much done except for the railings.  We're holding off on the railing until the kitchen is done.  We're trying to spread out the cost.

The kitchen was brought down to the studs in order to add insulation, electrical and fire protection on the garage side.  This process has been a little nerve racking.  We went from having perfectly good walls and lights back to nothing.  We are now starting to see the progress again and see the vision of the wonderful kitchen that we are about to have.  The following are pictures of the various stages of the kitchen remodel.

In order to get the walls in good shape, we’ve been adding sheetrock in the necessary places and then applying mud to interface with the old plaster walls. The ceiling has proved to be the most challenging.  My Dad has done a nice job making the old walls and ceiling look like new.

P6230006We got a new door from the kitchen to the garage.  To meet the code, we needed to get a fire door.  At first we didn’t want to replace our existing door but this is the start to the cottage door replacement throughout the whole house.  Eventually, all of the doors will match this door.

P6210060 Steve and I have been trying to figure out the finishing touches to the kitchen.  Since we now have the cabinets at the house, we decided to take one out of the box and take a look with the samples of granite and the possible knobs.  We took some pictures to get ideas for the look.  The white cabinets on their own could become any style but with the addition of the knobs (circled below) it’s clear that we have a cottage kitchen.  It’s amazing how the final design accessories sometimes make all the difference.  From this mock up we were finally able to make a decision on the countertops.  We’re going with Cambria black which is quartz. It’s not as shiny as the Absolute Black granite and seems to be a good compromise between what Steve and I want.

Steve and I tried out 3 colors for the wall and have chosen the first one.  We wanted a gray tone with either blue or green.

While the kitchen is being put back together, Steve and I are trying to figure out how to bring the living room together.  We knew that we wanted a new rug and found the perfect one at Home Goods for a good price.  Eventually, the green couches will make their way down to man town and we will replace them with something more cottage.

The gardens have continued to surprise us.  The next round of flowers have started to pop.  Look at some of the gems that are new to the garden.

Next week is going to be a big week.  The cabinets are going in and the room will start to look like a kitchen!

  1. Jill and Steve, We are so excited for you. What a transformation the kitchen has taken, with just sheetrock. Love the new rug in the livingroom, but where is a photo of the new mirror for above the fireplace? And WOW nice flowers in the gardens!

  2. Thank you Marianne for being our first comment! We appreciate your support and your request. Although the mantel is not fully ready for prime time, I've added a picture to show the new mirror. I'm interested to find out what kind of flower the tall pink one is. It's so beautiful and I just noticed it.
