Thanks to the help of the fam, we got an enormous amount done today....
We dug up the grass/roots in the back corner of our lot to make way for the homeless hostas. On Thursday night when we removed the hostas there were 5. Today, in order to get them to a more manageable size, we separated them into over 10. This was a much harder task than I originally anticipated. To complete this task in one day we needed all the help we could get. Somehow, we were able to recruit my mom, my dad, Marianne (mother-in-law) and Bob (father-in-law). They were a HUGE help!! Here are some before and after photos:

This is before we dug up the grass. What a big job! |

A nice home for the hostas. They will look better in a couple days. |
|
There were so many hostas after separating them that we decided to line the fence with them. |
While the ladies were working hard in the garden, Steve and my dad were working hard on the deck. They have made some great progress:
|
This deck is going to be awesome! |
My mom was also able to help with the rhododendrons that are taking over the side of our house. She was able to separate them into two distinct plants, find some of the other plants that were hiding underneath and get them away for the house.
She was going crazy in the front gardens too! She pruned the front gardens, transplanted overgrown flowers and generally took care of the crowding issues. Now the plants can breathe.

The garden looks so much better. Now I just need to tackle this ugly meter with some paint. |
|
The garden is just starting to bloom. I can't wait to see what kind of flowers we have! |
After Bob attacked the grass project with such enthusiasm, we gave him a large tool and told him to hack away at the overgrown spot in the middle of our yard. Look at what he was able to accomplish. Nice work! Or as he would tell you, "Hosta-la-vista Baby!"

The terrible overgrown mess before Bob got his hands on it. |

A view of the row of hostas and the spot that used to be overgrown and terrible that is now flat and wonderful. |
Steve has done a nice job on the shutters. I can't wait to see the final product. I will post the finished photos tomorrow.
It's amazing what you can get done with a little help from the family... who am I kidding... a lot of help! Luckily, tomorrow is Mother's Day and everyone can rest. Or... work in their own gardens! We have many more projects on the list but I'm very proud of what we've accomplished thus far. Stay tuned.
Jill
