Fun in the Sun!

It's been raining all week which means that I've done nothing in the garden!  So... when the sun came out this afternoon, I made sure that after work I put my old sneakers on and went outside to get my hands dirty.  My dad started on the deck today and is planning on making some serious progress tomorrow.  With the addition of the deck I knew that I needed to transplant some of the hostas that are in the way.  Steve and I were able to move all 5 plants!  This was way harder than I thought!!  My mom told me that you can't kill these plants... we'll see.  Here's before and after:
Before: The hostas that need to be moved.  You can see that they are right under where the deck is going.

Before: The other 2 were only kinda in the way of the deck but were starting to get in the way of the window.

After: No more hostas.

Steve and I are also planning to paint the shutters black.  Currently, the shutters are white and they blend into the house siding color.  We're looking for them to have a better contrast.  This is just the first of many projects that will increase the curb appeal of our house. Steve tried spray paint on the first one and it looks really good.  Now the only challenge is removing them.  There are a bunch of wasp nests behind them and we're both a little scared.  Luckily, we have some wasp spray.  That should take care of them!!!  Here's before and in progress:

Please don't think that while it was raining I didn't get anything accomplished.  I've been doing some research to learn how to refinish some of our furniture.  I haven't gotten very far but here's what I'm refinishing.  I plan on painting the table and chair the same color and then picking some nice cottagey fabric for the seat.

We also have big plans for the weekend.  Take a look at our to do list:
1. Remove all shutters and paint
2. Plant the hostas that we ripped out (before they die!)
3. Demo the current deck
4. Dig holes for deck
5. Build deck frame
6. Clean up front gardens
7. Bring our moms to brunch
8. Buy painting supplies for my table and chair project
9. Clean up weird overgrown spot in backyard
10. Trim rhododendrons (because they are taking over!)
The new home for the hostas.
The spot for the new deck.

The weird overgrown spot that needs to go.

I'll update on Sunday with what we actually got done.  Wish us luck!

Jill
